IDS 3309 How We Know What We Know
This class was one of the most thought-provoking classes I had taken. Throughout the semester we had various smaller critical-analysis papers to write, where we would have to reflect on our own media consumption habits and compare different mediums by which people get information. The semester-long capstone project tasked students with investigating and analyzing a recent media controversy. I chose the misinformation that spread during the beginning of the pandemic and investigated how different media outlets portrayed the same events to better fit their narratives. This class was a great opportunity to reflect on what it means to consume media with discernment and helped me gain more self-awareness when consuming media.
SYG 2000 Intro. to Sociology
I've always been drawn to the fields of psychology and sociology, as I feel that learning how and why people are the way they are helps us become more empathetic global citizens. Learning about the different societal structures that exist and how these abstract concepts heavily factor into how individuals develop and having to write reflections on the topic enabled me to grow in my understanding of differing world-views.
TSL 4324 ESOL Issues and Strategies for Content Area Teachers
This was one of my favorite classes I have taken at FIU. I have always been curious about the topic of language acquisition when it comes both primary and secondary languages, and this class taught me so much about that. My semester-long project involved meeting with an ESOL level 1-3 student twice a week and creating personalized lessons and activities to help them meet their goals. Making lessons creative and engaging are one of my favorite aspects of teaching, and seeing my student grow in confidence every meeting was such a rewarding experience. I have been able to apply all of the strategies I learned throughout this course in my subsequent teaching courses and again during my student teaching internship.
SCE 4194 Perspectives in Science and Math Education
This class was all about keeping multicultural perspectives in the classroom by integrating information about different mathematicians and scientists who contributed to the discipline-- specifically those who are not the white men everyone knows about. This class also challenged us to be creative with our assessments and interpretations of the material, tasking us with creating word walls, graphic organizers, and comics to depict what we've learned. Throughout the class we engaged in discussions about why these important figures were often overlooked and how this type of discrimination can be prevented.

Tuesday Times Roundtable
Tuesday Times Roundtables were such fun events! I loved how different every week was and how engaging the discussions were. I have never had the pleasure of being able to attend one in person, but even the virtual ones were very lively. TTRs always encouraged participants to broaden their worldview and expand their meaning of what it means to be a global citizen. I'm sure I will continue to catch up on some TTRs on YouTube even after I graduate!
Bioinformatics Research
From June to October 2020, I did bioinformatics research under Dr. Jessica Liberles. I investigated, in silico, the infectiousness of four proteins of the Coronavirus: the structural proteins Spike and Nucleocapsid and the non-structural proteins NSP2 and NSP3. I presented my research at the 2020 BSI Symposium and won the Best Poster award in the undergraduate division in July 2020 and again at the 2020 LSSF Conference in October 2020.
I was interviewed about my research for the FIU newspaper.

Panelist at the 2020 NASEM Town Hall
I was invited to be a panelist at the 2020 NASEM (National Academy of Science, Engineering, and Math) Town Hall. I was later interviewed for the FIU Newspaper.
