Alpha Epsilon DeltaAlpha Epsilon Delta is a National Pre-Health honor society where members can participate in community service, professional workshops, networking events, and connect with like-minded peers while working towards their professional goals. I served on the executive board of the FIU chapter for two semesters. LifeguardI first became a lifeguard in May 2019, becoming a Lifeguard 1 at Venetian Pool. I worked hard to improve my skills and become an excellent worker. My hard work paid off and I was in the top 5 scores for promotional exams that August, earning me a promotion to a Lifeguard 2. As a lifeguard 2, my duties were very similar to a lifeguard 1 but I was now expected to serve as a mentor to lifeguard 1s and assist lifeguard 3s in carrying out daily functions.
After a Covid-induced hiatus, I came back to Venetian Pool in May 2021, resuming my duties as a lifeguard 2. After working hard all Summer, I was nominated for a Lifeguard 3 position that had opened up, the highest-ranking lifeguard position. I earned the highest score in the promotional exam, securing my promotion. As a lifeguard 3 my duties changed a lot. Being a lifeguard 3 is a supervisor position, where I lead the lifeguard team on a daily basis, resolve conflicts between staff and guests, have administrative duties, and organize lifeguard courses and monthly in-service trainings. I also obtained my lifeguard instructor's license, so I now teach Lifeguard certification courses periodically throughout the year and train new lifeguards when they join our staff. While I had previously been responsible for making sure my own skills were up to par, I am now responsible for ensuring my entire lifeguard team is keeping up with their trainings and remediating them when necessary. Chemistry Learning AsistantAfter taking Chemistry 1 and 2 with Dr. Justin Carmel, I expressed interest in becoming an LA for him the following semester and was selected from a competitive group of applicants. I served as a Learning Assistant for 4 semesters, both in-person, online during Covid, and back again in person!
As an LA my duties included attending class and assisting my assigned 2-3 tables of students with worksheets and other aspects of the active-learning class activities, meeting with the professor for weekly meetings, and holding 2 office hour sections a week. Being an LA greatly enhanced my educational experience at FIU, as not only was I able to refresh my general chemistry knowledge as I moved up to harder classes, but I was also able to apply the skills I was learning in my teaching classes to better assisting my students. Dr. Carmel also served as an incredible mentor, helping us not only grow as LAs and chemists but also as professionals. I am incredibly grateful for my time as his LA. FIU H.E.A.L.I served as a founding e-board member of FIU H.E.A.L.-- Health Education for Aspiring Leaders, a pre-health organization at FIU. During the 2020-2021 year I served as secretary where my duties included consolidating all of the information to send weekly emails to the club, creating the meeting PowerPoints, and taking minutes during executive board meetings. During the 2021-2022 year I served as Social Chair and recruitment chair where my duties included organizing social events for club members, creating recruitment flyers and events to recruit new members, and reaching out to other on-campus organizations and offices to help spread club information
